Making It Easy For Past Guests To Leave A Google Maps Review...

...And Improve Your SEO At The Same Time

You are probably already eliciting feedback and comments from your past guests through follow-up emails or surveys and including the positive comments on your own website's Testimonial page. But did you know guests can leave ratings and reviews of their stay online and directly against your property's listing using Google Maps?
Making It Easy For Past Guests To Leave You A Google Maps Review

These ratings and reviews are great for people looking to know more about your accommodation before they book with you. The reviews also add to your online marketing and search engine optimisation efforts. Reviews tie more content with targeted keywords to your property's listing which in turn increases the likelihood that search engines will display your property above others with, say, less reviews.

You can make it easy for your guests to leave you a review by providing them with a link directly to the "Rate and Review" section of your Google Places listing.

How To Create A Google Places "Rate and Review" Link For Your Accommodation

The following steps show just how easy it is to create a Google Places "Rate and Review" link of your very own.

  1. Find your property listing on Google Maps
Go to Google Maps and use the search bar to find your property. The search results will be displayed in the left-hand pane. Click on the "more info >>" link inside your property's listing to take you to the full listing page. If you can't find your property on Google Maps, what are you waiting for? Log in to Google to create a listing for your accommodation.

  2. Copy the link to your property listing
In the top right-hand corner of the page, above the map, you'll find the "Link" button. Click on it to reveal the full link for your Google Places listing. Copy the link. (It will be a very long string of text.)

  3. Add the extra code for Reviews
Paste your link somewhere you can work with it such as Notepad or TextEdit. At the end of the link add the text "&action=open" (tip: be sure not include the quotes or to leave a space between your addition and the original link). Save your document with the link for future reference.

It's that easy. You're now ready to use the link to send to your past guests when encouraging them to write a review for you. When the link is clicked, your guests will be taken directly to your listing's "Rate and Review" section where they can start to leave their review and rating. They'll need to log into Google before they can begin. If they don't have a free Google account, it only takes a matter of minutes to set one up.

Your use of this link shouldn't be limited to email correspondence with your guests. Why not create a "Write a Review" button on your website with your Google Places link behind it? You could even send the link in guest surveys or thank you pages. Anytime that you are communicating with a past guest is an opportunity to ask for a review. Remember to check your listing a few days after you've asked for the review to make sure that the review has been completed and to thank your guest for taking the time to leave their comments.

Other Sites Where Guests Can Leave A Review

Google Places isn't the only place online that guests can leave a review of your accommodation. Websites such as Yahoo! Local (powered by for Australian businesses), totaltravel, Stayz (through their Guestbook feature), TakeABreak and TripAdvisor all offer the opportunity for guests to leave their comments. TripAdvisor's guest reviews are now being incorporated into other accommodation listing sites, so it pays to have as many reviews for your rental up there as possible. There are also dedicated business review sites such as WOMOW (Word Of Mouth On the Web) which you could leverage.

Why not set yourself an online marketing goal to get at least one past guest review on each of the property listing sites that you're currently listed with? Are there a few past guests that you could email today to ask for a review? To help you achieve your goal, I've found a sample email that you can use when requesting comments, feedback and reviews.

By encouraging guests to leave you an online review and by making it as easy as possible for them to do so, you are not only increasing your accommodation's positive internet exposure, you are also encouraging prospective guests to book by letting them know what great experiences previous guests had staying at your accommodation.

Good luck!
